Description
In 2001, my husband and I visited one of the Kayan villages in Mae Hong Son province in Thailand. Women of the Kayan tribe (ethnic minority of Burma) are well known for wearing neck rings. It was believed that the rings protected women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Contrastingly it has also been theorised that the coils originate from the desire for women to look more attractive.
We met this girl as we were entering the refugee camp. We tried to talk to her but she was very shy. We had a great time with these people. Some played their handmade guitars for us and a bunch of kids giggled and played around while we ate snacks with them. It was a great experience.
